Why you should care about childhood hunger:
It starts before birth:
Low prenatal iron is linked to language and comprehension delays through a child’s first five years.
It affects brain development:
Nutrient gaps in infancy can weaken reasoning, memory, and learning at a critical stage.
It raises mental health risks:
Childhood hunger is associated with later depression and can disrupt early parent-child attachment.
It creates lasting stress:
Even a few hunger episodes can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, asthma, and autoimmune conditions later in childhood.
It’s linked to obesity:
Hunger can disrupt feeding patterns and limit access to healthy food, contributing to weight issues.
Nutrient deficiencies have immediate consequences. Low energy, mood changes, weakened immunity, and stunted growth can all result from inadequate early nutrition.
The health impact can last decades. Anemia, rickets, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis are among the documented downstream risks.
Childhood hunger doesn’t stay in childhood.
Kids can't go hungry.
