Why Walk the World? And Why The Passage?
It's been a long and winding road to where I am today.
As many of you know, I grew up in central Appalachia, a region of the United States which has been systemically impoverished for essentially its entire existence as colonised land.
I wasn't exempt from that theme. There have been many times where I didn't live in a home of my own. I've stayed in relatives' homes and couch surfed with friends. In 2010, I had six different addresses.
And yet, I was still lucky. Because through all of that, thanks to the unwavering support of my friends and family I always at least had a roof over my head. Because of that support, I was able to build myself up to where I am now.
What I hope to communicate here is that none of us are as insulated from being unhoused as we like to believe. Most of us are only a couple bad months away from it, in fact.
As a society, we are only doing as well as our least fortunate. And currently we are failing a lot of our neighbours on that front. That's why the work of charities like The Passage are so important as we work towards a world where their services are no longer required.
