We will be meeting at Lake Nokomis, which is just a few miles from our office. It’s a beautiful lake with plenty of trees & wildlife. Lake Nokomis is about 3 miles around (5K). Walkers will be given the option to walk around the entire lake or just part of it. We selected the month of May for our walk because that time of year the temperatures are usually in the 60’s….perfect walking weather. It’s the time of year when the trees are budding, the ducks have returned from down south and the flowers are starting to bloom.
May’s weather can also be unpredictable. If the weather that day is too cold (can be in the 30’s), too hot (can be in the 90’s) or stormy (May is the start of tornado season in Minnesota), we will walk our 5K indoors, at the Mall of American. (Just down the street from our office)
When we return to Lake Nokomis’ main beach, we will have a picnic, catered by a local sub-sandwich shop. We plan to take lots of pictures on the walk and at the picnic.
Following the picnic, those that have time, will help take our donations of food and money to the Second Harvest Heartland headquarters in St. Paul. (Our Charity).
Our 2018 Charity is Second Harvest Heartland (SHH)
This St. Paul, Minnesota-based hunger relief organization is one of the largest and most innovative. SHH partners with nearly 1,000 local food shelves, food pantries and other meal programs in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
The group acts as an aggregator and distributor for food resources. Some of the non-profit’s innovative programs include: Share Fresh, a partnership with area farmers that donate surplus produce; Food Rescue, which works with grocery stores to capture replaced store items; Food Bank, collects individual direct donations; Summer Food Service, provides lunches for school kids during the summer, and, Community Supplemental Programs, which are designed to balance nutritional needs for senior citizens.
Our program will raise support funds, provide direct non-perishable food donations and offer volunteering service opportunities at SHH and throughout its community partnership network.
Donations will be collected in cash.
